Q: I want to add or remove questions from an assignment, but I am getting a message that I can’t edit the assignment because at least 1 student has already started working on it. What do I do?
A: Many times this might be because you discovered a question on your assignment that you would like to remove. It might be something you haven’t covered or a question of which you disagree with the answer. At this time, we do not allow assignments that have been started by students to be edited. We apologize that this is not available and it is something we are currently looking into allowing. In the meantime you have the following options.
First, you can leave the assignment alone and adjust scores after the fact. This can be done using the Change Scores feature in the Gradebook(found under the class average for each assignment). The Change Scores page will let you select all students and increase or decrease their scores by a certain point value or percentage. As one question on one assignment will usually not affect students’ scores in a meaningful way, most instructors elect to use the Change Scores page to give the students the extra points for the “bad” question. This is the easiest method for all involved.
The other options are to review each students work and change scores manually or to make a copy of the assignment, make the desired change, and then un-assign the original assignment. However, students who have already completed work in the original assignment will need to re-do the assignment. Below you will find the steps necessary to complete this procedure.
1. You must first make a copy of the assignment that you wish to edit.
- Navigate to the Homework or Test/Quiz Manager and locate the assignment you wish to edit.
- Select Copy from the “Actions” drop-menu to the right of the assignment name.
- Change the name of the assignment and click Next.
- Edit your copied assignment in the add content or assignment settings page. Click Save & Assign.
2. Then, you must un-assign the original assignment.
- On the Homework or Test/Quiz Manager page, locate the original assignment.
- Select Un-assign from the “Actions” drop- down menu to the right of the assignment name and click Go.
3. Finally, you must Delete the assignment’s results and allow for students to re-attempt or Submit Score to manually add their results from the original assignment.
To Delete the assignment, you must navigate to the Gradebook.
- Select Delete Results from the “Other Gradebook Tools” drop-down menu.
- Select the original assignment and click Update.
To Submit Score and manually add students’ results to the new assignment, navigate to the student names in the Gradebook.
- Select Submit Score from the “Actions” drop- down menu to the right of the new assignment and click Go.
- Type in the student’s points and click Okay.
